History of the Club

Before 1840 – A Cottage
            1840 – 1870 – Westwood National School
            1871 – 1898 – Westwood Reading Room
1898 – present – Westwood Heath Club & Reading Rooms

It is known that parts of the present club building dates back to at least 1840’s, when at that time it was used as a cottage and then a school for local children.

In 1898, the ownership of the building was taken on by The Honourable Rupert Leigh of Stoneleigh Abbey.  It was opened up as a Reading Room so that Lord Leigh could teach his servants to read.  At that time, Lord Leigh would not allow any licensed properties on his land.  However, there was a loophole in this local legislation, so the servants paid for their beer prior to going to a serving hatch; this was allowed........so the legend goes!

From 1898 The Westwood Heath Club & Reading Rooms became what it is today.  A family orientated, friendly, private members club.  Everyone is made more than welcome and many a happy hour has been had by many friends and family.  In fact, the Westwood is one happy extended family!  Our Steward and Stewardess Moz & Patsy celebrate 40 years continuous service in November this year.  They commenced employment on 10th November 1969, and at the time lived in a caravan on site for about the first 3 years, before the new building and flat were constructed in the early 70’s, now that is job dedication!

Today, the club is organised and headed up by a Committee, they are:-
